Sustainability Award 2025

"A wonderful project that goes far beyond legal requirements. Schaefer Kalk sets an exemplary standard, showing what is possible with strong personal commitment from the company management and employees. They more than deserve first place in this year's MIRO Sustainability Award in the Ecology 2 category," said Mr. Wottke from WWF, who presented the award to Steffen Loos on behalf of SCHAEFER KALK.

Bee-eaters, eagle owls, natterjack toads, great crested newts, yellow-bellied toads, woodlarks, turtle doves, tree pipits, skylarks, linnets, stonechats, red-backed shrikes, sand lizards, and many more species can be found in and around the Hahnstätten plant – both in the active quarries and on disused areas, spoil heaps, and steep rock faces.

Out of more than 30 biodiversity projects submitted, a distinguished jury consisting of members from NABU, WWF, IG BAU, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation selected SCHAEFER KALK’s project as the winner.

"25 years of tireless effort to promote biodiversity – starting with the creation of small ponds, protecting nesting sites in the quarry, setting up breeding habitats, and much more – this forms the foundation for this award and recognition of our ongoing commitment to enhancing biodiversity in both flora and fauna," said Dr. Kai Schaefer. "It’s a valuable result we are proud of, and one through which we make a meaningful contribution to biodiversity."
